The Palace was one of the finest and greatest residences of the richest Bishops in medieval England. The Bishop's of Winchester possessed  vast estates and were frequently leading Officials and Ministers of the Government of the day.

All this provided both the money to build and the ability to display great wealth. The Palace was one of the greatest of a series of great houses that they built: stately homes well able to cater both for the Bishop and his household and for the Royal guests with their entourages.

At Bishop's Waltham you can see the work of the two main periods when the Palace was extensively rebuilt, the late twelfth century, and the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries.

Bishop's Waltham is fortunate to have an almost complete set of accounts starting from the early thirteenth century and a guidebook, available at the Palace, has drawn upon this source of rich detail to give a descriptive tour of the Palace and a history of the building and it's occupants.
